St. Moritz — the original alpine resort

St. Moritz — the original alpine resort

Birthplace of alpine winter tourism (1864) in the Engadin valley — frozen lake, Cresta Run, Corviglia skiing and 300 days of sun a year.

About this destination

St. Moritz invented alpine winter tourism in 1864 when hotelier Johannes Badrutt bet his summer guests they would prefer winter on the lake. Today it remains the most glamorous Engadin resort, with twice-hosted Winter Olympics, the Cresta Run toboggan, polo and horse racing on the frozen lake in February, and skiing on Corviglia, Corvatsch and Diavolezza. The town sits at 1,822 m on Lake St. Moritz; the Engadin valley around it is a national-park-grade landscape of larch forests and high lakes.

Best time to visit

December–March for the social season and skiing; July–September for hiking and the Engadin lakes.

Why a private transfer

Engadin trains require multiple changes; a private Mercedes from Zurich or Milan is door-to-hotel in 3 hours over the Julier or Maloja pass.
