Cēsis — Medieval Heart of Latvia

Cēsis — Medieval Heart of Latvia

One of the best-preserved medieval towns in the Baltics, with a 13th-century Livonian Order castle and a romantic old town.

About this destination

Cēsis (founded 1206) was the second city of the Livonian Order. The castle ruins are explored by candlelight lantern — visitors are handed a real candle-lantern at the gate. The pastel old town, the New Castle museum, the Gauja National Park trails right at the edge of town, and a strong craft-beer and food scene (Cēsu Alus brewery dates from 1590) make Cēsis Latvia's premier weekend break.

Best time to visit

May–September for outdoor activities; December for the Christmas market in the castle courtyard.

Why a private transfer

Easy day-trip from Riga but the medieval old town is car-unfriendly. Door-to-door drop at the castle gate. Fixed price.
