Jūrmala — Latvia's wooden seaside resort

Jūrmala — Latvia's wooden seaside resort

33 km of white-sand Baltic beach backed by pine forest and art-nouveau wooden villas — Latvia's historic spa town, 20 km from Riga.

About this destination

Jūrmala stretches 33 km along the Gulf of Riga between the sea and the Lielupe river — a single line of white sand backed by Scots pine and an extraordinary stock of 19th- and early-20th-century wooden architecture. The pedestrian Jomas iela in Majori is the social spine; Dzintari Concert Hall, the open-air sculpture park and the Kemeri National Park bog boardwalks anchor each end. Jūrmala has been Latvia's seaside escape since the 1820s and the wooden art-nouveau villas — many restored as boutique hotels — are unique in Europe. RIX airport is 20 km away, an easy 25-minute private transfer.

Best time to visit

June–August for the beach; September for empty dunes and golden pine forest.

Why a private transfer

Train from Riga is fine, but a private Mercedes is door-to-villa with luggage — and the only practical option for Kemeri National Park.
