Curonian Spit — UNESCO Sand Dunes of the Baltic

Curonian Spit — UNESCO Sand Dunes of the Baltic

A 98 km sandbar of giant dunes, pine forest and fishing villages between the Baltic Sea and the Curonian Lagoon (UNESCO 2000).

About this destination

Reached by a 5-minute ferry from Klaipėda, the Curonian Spit is one of Europe's most dramatic coastal landscapes — drifting dunes up to 60 m high, planted with pine to stop them from burying villages. The main resort, Nida, has Thomas Mann's summer cottage (now a museum), wooden weathervane-decorated fishermen's houses in cobalt blue, and the spectacular Parnidis Dune sundial at the southern tip overlooking Russia. Cycle paths run the full length; sunset on the dunes is unforgettable.

Best time to visit

May–September; July–August peak; September quiet and golden.
