Klaipėda — Lithuania's port and gateway to the Curonian Spit

Half-timbered old town on the Dane river, a working tall-ship harbour and the ferry to the UNESCO-listed Curonian Spit dunes.

About this destination

Klaipėda, founded as Memel in 1252, is Lithuania's only seaport and the gateway to the Curonian Spit. The compact old town keeps its fachwerk half-timbered facades and a clockmaker's square (Theatre Square), with the Dane river quay full of tall ships and pleasure boats. Five minutes by ferry across the lagoon, the Curonian Spit National Park is a 98 km strand of pine forest and 50-metre-high white sand dunes shared with Russia — UNESCO World Heritage and one of the most extraordinary landscapes on the Baltic. The summer Sea Festival (last weekend of July) fills the harbour with sailing ships.

Best time to visit
