Gorges du Verdon — Europe's Grand Canyon

Gorges du Verdon — Europe's Grand Canyon

Turquoise river beneath 700-metre limestone cliffs — the deepest canyon in Europe.

About this destination

The Verdon river has carved a 25-kilometre gorge through the limestone of Haute-Provence, leaving cliffs that drop 700 metres straight down to a vivid turquoise current. The scenic Route des Crêtes loops along the north rim with a dozen vertiginous belvederes; the Corniche Sublime traces the south rim past the Balcons de la Mescla. At the western end, Lac de Sainte-Croix offers kayaks, electric boats and swimming in calm emerald water. Climbers, hikers and paragliders share the park with golden eagles and griffon vultures. It is the natural day trip from the Riviera or from Aix.

Best time to visit

May–June and September for hiking and clear light; July–August for swimming; avoid weekends in high season for the belvederes.

Why a private transfer

Roads are narrow, winding and exposed; parking at the best viewpoints fills early. A private chauffeur lets you focus on the views and combine the Route des Crêtes, Lac de Sainte-Croix and a stop in Moustiers in a single day.
