Moustiers-Sainte-Marie — the village under the star
A clifftop village famed for faïence pottery, with a gilded star hanging on a chain between two limestone bluffs.
About this destination
Listed among the most beautiful villages of France, Moustiers clings to a ravine where two limestone cliffs almost meet. A gilded sixteen-pointed star hangs from a 135-metre chain stretched between them — a legend says a returning crusader put it there to thank the Virgin. Stone lanes climb to the Notre-Dame de Beauvoir chapel; in the village below, ateliers carry on three centuries of Moustiers faïence — tin-glazed earthenware once collected by Louis XIV. The Verdon gorge starts a few minutes away, and Lac de Sainte-Croix lies at its mouth.
Best time to visit
May–June and September for clear skies and easy walking; lavender blooms on the surrounding plateau in early July.
Why a private transfer
Approach roads are narrow and the village has very limited parking. A private chauffeur drops you at the edge of the old centre and is the natural way to pair Moustiers with the Verdon and Sainte-Croix.
