Aix-en-Provence — City of fountains and Cézanne

Aix-en-Provence — City of fountains and Cézanne

Plane-tree boulevards, baroque mansions and the studio of Paul Cézanne.

About this destination

Founded by the Romans for its hot springs (Aquae Sextiae), Aix-en-Provence is the elegant student capital of Provence — a city of fountains, ochre 17th-century mansions and tree-shaded squares. The Cours Mirabeau, lined with four fountains and a hundred plane trees, runs the heart of the town, with the Mazarin quarter's hôtels particuliers to the south and the old Roman Aix to the north. Paul Cézanne lived and painted here all his life: his studio at the Atelier des Lauves remains as he left it, and the Sainte-Victoire mountain he painted obsessively rises on the eastern horizon.

Best time to visit

April–June and September for festivals (opera in July) and outdoor café life without August heat.

Why a private transfer

Aix's old centre is mostly pedestrian and parking is hard. A private chauffeur from Marseille Airport or by the day lets you also visit Cézanne's studio and the Luberon villages with no logistics.
