Tallinn — UNESCO old town on the Gulf of Finland

Tallinn — UNESCO old town on the Gulf of Finland

One of Europe's best-preserved medieval cities — Toompea hill, town hall square, intact 14th-century walls and a modern tech-driven downtown.

About this destination

Tallinn's Old Town has been a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1997 and remains the most complete medieval city in northern Europe. The upper town (Toompea) holds the cathedral, the pink Alexander Nevsky and the Estonian parliament; the lower town clusters around the Gothic Town Hall and the merchant houses of the Hanseatic League. Almost the entire 14th-century city wall is intact, with 20 of the original 46 towers standing. Beyond the wall: Kadriorg Palace and KUMU art museum, the Telliskivi creative quarter, and the Old Town port with Helsinki ferries. The airport is 5 km from the centre and one of Europe's most punctual.

Best time to visit

May–September for long White Nights and outdoor cafés; December for the UNESCO-listed Christmas market.
