Kaunas — Lithuania's Modernist Capital (UNESCO 2023)

Kaunas — Lithuania's Modernist Capital (UNESCO 2023)

Lithuania's second city: a baroque old town, a UNESCO-listed interwar Modernist district, and the country's most exuberant café culture.

About this destination

Kaunas was the temporary capital of Lithuania from 1919 to 1939 — a period in which the city was rebuilt in Lithuanian Modernist (Art Deco) style, recognised by UNESCO in 2023. The 16th-century Town Hall (the 'White Swan') presides over the cobbled Old Town Square at the confluence of the Nemunas and Neris rivers. Don't miss: Kaunas Castle, the Devils' Museum, Pažaislis Monastery on the lakeside and the funicular up to Christ's Resurrection Basilica. European Capital of Culture 2022.

Best time to visit
