Trakai Island Castle — Lithuania's Most Iconic Day Trip

Trakai Island Castle — Lithuania's Most Iconic Day Trip

A 14th-century red-brick Gothic castle on its own island in Lake Galvė — 30 minutes from Vilnius.

About this destination

Trakai was the medieval capital of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. The Island Castle (Salos Pilis) is the only fully restored insular fortress in Eastern Europe — connected to the shore by a long wooden footbridge, surrounded by the deep blue waters of Lake Galvė. The historic Karaim community (Turkic-speaking Jews settled here in 1397 by Grand Duke Vytautas) still bakes the famous kibinai meat pastries — eaten lakeside on a wooden terrace at sunset is one of Lithuania's defining experiences.

Best time to visit

May–September; June–August for kayaking; winter for snowy castle photos.

Why a private transfer

Bus from Vilnius is slow with poor luggage space. Door-to-door drop at the footbridge, plus optional kibinai stop and waiting time. Fixed price.
