Riga Christmas Market — Dome Square

Riga Christmas Market — Dome Square

The Christmas market that has claimed Europe's first decorated tree (1510), set on UNESCO Dome Square under fresh snow.

About this destination

From late November until 7 January, Doma laukums — the central square of Riga's UNESCO Old Town — turns into a traditional Christmas village. A tall decorated fir tree (Riga and Tallinn both claim the title of the first public Christmas tree, 1510) anchors a circle of wooden stalls selling karstvīns (mulled wine), grey peas with bacon, smoked salmon, gingerbread (piparkūkas), sheepskin and Baltic amber. The Riga Dome Cathedral, the House of the Blackheads and St Peter's spire form the backdrop. Live folk concerts, candle-makers and a small petting zoo for children. Smaller satellite markets run on Līvu laukums and Esplanāde park.

Best time to visit

Late November to 7 January; weekends in mid-December are busiest.
