Riga — Art Nouveau Capital of the Baltics

Riga — Art Nouveau Capital of the Baltics

Latvia's capital and the largest city in the Baltics — a UNESCO old town and the world's densest collection of Art Nouveau façades.

About this destination

Riga (founded 1201) stands on the Daugava river, 10 km from the Baltic Sea. Its medieval Old Town is UNESCO World Heritage: the House of the Blackheads on Town Hall Square, the 1211 Dome Cathedral, the gothic St Peter's Church (123 m spire) and the Three Brothers. The Centrs district concentrates over 800 Art Nouveau buildings (more than any other city in the world) — Alberta iela, designed largely by Mikhail Eisenstein, is the masterpiece. The Central Market — Europe's largest, housed in repurposed Zeppelin hangars — anchors the riverside, while the Latvian National Opera, the Song & Dance Festival (UNESCO Intangible Heritage) and the riverside Mežaparks make Riga the cultural capital of the Baltics.

Best time to visit

May–September for outdoor terraces and the Song Festival (every five years, next 2028); late November to early January for the Christmas market.
