Saaremaa — Estonia's Island of Castles and Windmills
Estonia's largest island: a perfectly preserved Episcopal castle, windmills, juniper-scented coast and a famous meteorite crater.
About this destination
Saaremaa is reached by ferry from Virtsu — a 30-minute crossing through the Väinameri archipelago. The capital Kuressaare is built around the only fully preserved medieval fortified castle in the Baltic states (14th century, with bishop's residence, moat and bastions intact). Other highlights: the Angla windmill ridge, the perfectly circular Kaali meteorite crater (lake formed 4000 years ago), Panga cliff, juniper-clad Sõrve peninsula and Pöide church. Famous for spas, smoked fish and home-brewed õlu.
Best time to visit
June–August; quieter shoulder May/September.
