Zurich — finance, lake and the Limmat
Switzerland's largest city on the northern tip of Lake Zurich — UNESCO old town, Bahnhofstrasse, Kunsthaus and the gateway to the Alps.
About this destination
Zurich sits at the head of Lake Zurich where the Limmat begins its run to the Aare and Rhine. The medieval Altstadt straddles both banks: the Grossmünster (where Huldrych Zwingli launched the Swiss Reformation in 1519), the Fraumünster with its Chagall stained glass, the guild houses of Limmatquai, and the Bahnhofstrasse — Europe's most expensive shopping street, running 1.4 km from the main station to the lake. Beyond the centre: the Kunsthaus and its Giacometti collection, the lakefront promenade, and direct rail links to St. Moritz, Lucerne and Bern. ZRH is 13 km from downtown and the largest hub in Switzerland.
Best time to visit
