Avignon — City of the Popes
UNESCO-listed papal palace, ramparts above the Rhône and the famous broken bridge.
About this destination
From 1309 to 1377 Avignon was the seat of the Catholic Church, and the city still wears that history on its skyline. The Palais des Papes is the largest Gothic palace in Europe; its ramparts ring an old town of squares, ochre façades and the Place de l'Horloge. The Pont Saint-Bénézet — the bridge of the children's song — reaches halfway across the Rhône before stopping where floods carried it away. Each July, the Festival d'Avignon turns the whole city into the largest live-theatre stage on the continent. Avignon is also the gateway to the Luberon villages, the Côtes-du-Rhône vineyards and the lavender plateau.
Best time to visit
April–June and September for the city; July for the Festival; late June–mid July for lavender.
Why a private transfer
Avignon's old town is walled and almost entirely pedestrian. A private chauffeur drops you at the gate and is the natural way to combine the city with the Luberon, Châteauneuf-du-Pape or the lavender route.
