Marseille — France's Mediterranean capital
Vieux Port, Notre-Dame de la Garde and the wild Calanques — 2,600 years of Mediterranean life.
About this destination
Founded by Greek sailors around 600 BC, Marseille is France's oldest city and its great Mediterranean port. Life still revolves around the Vieux Port, where fishermen sell the morning catch at quayside stalls under the gaze of Notre-Dame de la Garde, the basilica perched on the city's highest hill. The MuCEM and Fort Saint-Jean frame the harbour mouth with bold contemporary architecture, while the old Panier district climbs in pastel terraces above. Just east of the city, the white limestone Calanques plunge into a turquoise sea — a national park reachable by car, boat or hike.
Best time to visit
May–June and September–October for warm days, swimmable sea and clear light without high-summer heat.
Why a private transfer
Marseille traffic is dense and Provençal distances are deceptive. A private chauffeur from MRS or NCE takes you door-to-door and is the easiest way to combine the city with the Calanques, Cassis or Aix.
