Baltic Seaside Escapes — Jūrmala, Pärnu, Palanga & Liepāja

The Baltic coast in summer: wide white-sand beaches, pine forests, wooden Art Nouveau villas and a calm sea kept warmer than the open ocean.

About this destination

The eastern Baltic coast offers a uniquely European mix: long flat beaches of fine quartz sand (most flying the Blue Flag), warm shallow water from June to August, and historic wooden-villa resort towns built for the 19th-century Russian Imperial and Latvian-German bourgeoisie. The classic stops: Jūrmala (Latvia, 33 km of beach next to Riga, the Dzintari concert hall and the largest concentration of wooden Art Nouveau resort architecture in Europe), Pärnu (Estonia, the country's summer capital with a long pier, mud spas and the Estonian Birthday Beach Party), Palanga (Lithuania, the Tiškevičius palace and Amber Museum), and Liepāja (Latvia, white beach plus the unusual Karosta naval-port heritage). The whole loop is drivable in 3–5 days, with optional ferry to Saaremaa.

Best time to visit

Mid-June to mid-August for swimming; September for empty beaches and golden pine forest.
