Lyon — France's Gastronomic Capital
A UNESCO World Heritage city at the confluence of the Rhône and Saône — Renaissance old town, silk-weaver passageways, and the country's most celebrated food scene.
About this destination
Lyon is France's third-largest city and its undisputed gastronomic capital, home to bouchons, Paul Bocuse's Halles and a generation of Michelin-starred chefs. Vieux Lyon, with its Renaissance courtyards and the basilica of Notre-Dame de Fourvière on the hill, is one of Europe's largest preserved Renaissance districts. Beyond the city, Lyon is the natural gateway to the Beaujolais and Côtes du Rhône vineyards, the Alps (Chamonix and Courchevel are under three hours) and Provence (Avignon in two hours by car).
Best time to visit
April–June and September–October for mild weather and wine harvest. December for the Fête des Lumières.
