Tartu — Estonia's University City & 2024 Capital of Culture

Tartu — Estonia's University City & 2024 Capital of Culture

Estonia's intellectual heart since 1632 — pastel old town, the leaning house, and the country's most respected university.

About this destination

Tartu (European Capital of Culture 2024) is the second city of Estonia and home to its oldest university, founded by King Gustav II Adolf of Sweden in 1632. The pink Town Hall presides over Town Hall Square with its Kissing Students fountain; the leaning house next door is Tartu's Pisa. Toomemägi hill hides cathedral ruins and the Old Anatomical Theatre; the Estonian National Museum on the edge of town is one of the most striking modern museums in Northern Europe.
