Forcalquier — Capital of Haute-Provence
A medieval hilltop town with one of France's most authentic Provençal markets, surrounded by lavender, almond and olive groves.
About this destination
Forcalquier rises between the Luberon and Lure mountains, in the heart of the Haute-Provence Geopark — a UNESCO area renowned for clear skies and herbal traditions. The Monday morning market (since 1009) is among the most authentic in Provence: lavender honey, goat cheeses, herbs and Banon. Above the town, the Notre-Dame de Provence citadel offers 360° views over the Luberon, Lure and Verdon. Nearby: the Salagon Priory ethnobotanical gardens, the Observatoire de Haute-Provence and the Mane Citadel of Saint-Michel.
Best time to visit
June–early August for lavender; Monday for the market; September for harvest.
Why a private transfer
Haute-Provence is wide-open countryside with no direct trains and winding D-roads. We chain the market, distilleries and viewpoints in one comfortable day — fixed price from Aix, Avignon, Marseille or Nice.
