Hyères — Palm-Lined Riviera Gateway
France's first winter resort, with a medieval old town, 7,000 palm trees and ferry access to the Îles d'Or.
About this destination
Hyères, often called 'Hyères-les-Palmiers,' was the original Côte d'Azur winter retreat — Queen Victoria, Tolstoy and Edith Wharton all spent seasons here. The medieval old town climbs to the ruins of Castel Sainte-Claire, while the modernist Villa Noailles is a landmark of Mediterranean architecture. The Giens peninsula stretches south to a double tombolo and salt marshes; ferries from La Tour Fondue reach Porquerolles in 20 minutes, Port-Cros in 40 and Le Levant beyond. Beaches, vineyards and the calanques of Carqueiranne are all within easy reach.
Best time to visit
April–June and September–October for warm weather without summer crowds.
