Saint-Rémy-de-Provence — Van Gogh & the Alpilles
An elegant plane-tree town at the foot of the Alpilles — Van Gogh's last landscapes and Roman Glanum.
About this destination
Saint-Rémy is the chic heart of the Alpilles: shaded boulevards, weekly Provençal markets, fountains and cafés on every corner. Van Gogh painted Starry Night and 150 other works during his year at the Saint-Paul de Mausole monastery just outside town; today the cypress alley and wheat fields he portrayed remain. Nearby Glanum is one of France's most complete Greco-Roman archaeological sites. Nostradamus was born here in 1503. The town is also a gateway to Les Baux-de-Provence and the Carrières des Lumières.
Best time to visit
April–June and September–October; Wednesday market all year.
Why a private transfer
Saint-Rémy is small and parking is tight in the old centre; Glanum, Saint-Paul and Les Baux are spread out. We chain them in one comfortable day — fixed price from Avignon, Marseille or your villa.
